It was refreshing to see Amy Winehouse's reaction and acceptance speech when she received her award for Record of the Year. This, after being denied a US Visa to attend the Grammy Awards personally.
It's nice to know that some artists who really do deserve it find it surreal that they don't deserve such accolades, unlike Kanye West's reaction in the MTV Awards before. And yes, Kanye West was nominated in the same category.
Ok, so Amy's a crackhead who isn't pretty, but she's made her music and I've heard it and it speaks to me and I like it. I can't understand Kanye's self-indulgent plan to be the best artist of all time, indirectly comparing himself to the likes of Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Madonna. It's hard to say who is best, but there is always a place there for someone great. I've heard Kanye's music. I tried to feel and hear its greatness to no avail. And all I really hear is a self-imposed suggestion to think of him great. That or maybe I just loved Amy Winehouse's half-hopeful, half-reflexive reaction after a really really subdued but equally powerful performance. Even if she is a crackhead, who isn't as pretty and as responsible as she should be (so said someone in this forum), it is never about drugs or the ambition or the award. The music speaks for itself.
